in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, i would like to spotlight 1970's bombshell actress Pam Grier. the original "Foxy Brown" was diagnosed with the disease in 1988 when doctors "gave" her 18 months to live. five years after her diagnosis, a battle that included many surgeries, chemo, and radiation, the cancer was in remission.
Ms. Grier may be most recognizably known as the "Queen of Blaxploitation" for her standout stardom during this era in the 70's for films such as the aformentioned "Foxy Brown", "Coffy", and "Sheba Baby". after breaking a while to pursue other interests, Grier returned to the big screen in Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" gaining her a new audience of fans along with the praise of her steady following.
Pam Grier is definitely a warrior and a champion. you can catch her as Kit Porter on Showtime's The L Word.
visit The Nat'l Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for more information on how to fight breast cancer and end the disease. be sure to encourage all the women in your life to take charge of their health and have annual breast exams. also be advised that this disease is not exclusive to women, so you should have regular check-ups as well. xoxo
